Welcome to the Graduate Program in Arts Education at UPI (Master’s & Doctoral Levels)

The Graduate Program in Art Education at the School of Postgraduate Studies, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), offers Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) degree programs. This multidisciplinary program encompasses various fields of art education, including Dance Education, Music Education, Visual Arts Education, and Theatre Education.

Led by Prof. Juju Masunah, M. Hum., Ph.D., as the Head of the Study Program, this program aims to produce graduates who excel in the field of arts education and are capable of making significant contributions to the development of knowledge, practice, and policy in the arts at both national and international levels.

Courses in the Arts Education Program are delivered by lecturers who are experts in their respective fields and possess strong national and international reputations. The facilities, learning resources, and academic services are provided professionally. The learning process is conducted through face-to-face lectures, distance learning, and blended learning methods.

The implementation of the university’s Tridharma (three pillars of higher education) is realized through high-quality education; interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research; community service activities, seminars, workshops, performances, exhibitions, and publications in national and international journals. This study program maintains collaborations with professional associations, communities, universities both domestic and international, as well as government institutions. It is expected that these Tridharma activities and partnerships will support graduates in becoming successful, distinguished, and capable of applying their expertise for the advancement of the nation.

Join us in shaping a future where the arts have greater quality and impact on society.

Rationale

The rapid advancement of science, education, the arts, and technology in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0 has led to intense global competition. This demands that graduates of the Arts Education Program possess adequate knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to apply them creatively and innovatively. Consequently, curriculum reform has become a necessity in order to align with these ongoing developments. The newly designed curriculum therefore prepares an arts education approach that is responsive to the advancements in science and technology, aimed at strengthening educational values and character, and enhancing innovation in learning, research, and community service (the Tri Dharma of Higher Education).

Analysis of the academic disciplines confirms that the offered courses are highly relevant and enrich the knowledge required for the master’s level. Tracer studies of alumni show that most graduates are employed in roles aligned with their academic background, particularly as educators across various levels of formal education—such as junior high schools (SMP), senior high schools (SMA), and universities—as well as in non-formal education settings. Additionally, some alumni work as policymakers within the Departments of Education, Culture, and Tourism. Stakeholders have also provided input on the curriculum revision for the Master’s Program in Art Education to ensure that courses support the demands of rapid societal and technological change.

The curriculum development of the Master’s Program in Art Education anticipates the fast-paced evolution of technology, information, and communication (ICT).

The accreditation decree for the Master’s Program in Art Education was issued by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) under Decree Number 5194/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/M/XII/2017, valid from December 27, 2017, to December 27, 2022, with an accreditation rating of “A.” The main academic focuses of the program include Dance Education, Music Education, and Visual Arts Education.

Faculty members of the Master’s Program in Art Education are recruited by the university based on academic qualifications, with a minimum requirement of a doctoral degree, and specialization in the arts, art education, or other relevant humanities fields. In addition to academic qualifications, faculty are expected to uphold personal integrity, demonstrate commitment to institutional regulations, abide by ethical codes, and show respect for the intellectual work of others. Faculty members actively conduct research at both national and international levels and integrate research findings into teaching and community service. They are also affiliated with professional associations such as the Indonesian Art Educators Association (APSI), the Association of Art Education Graduate Programs (AP2SPs), the Association of Indonesian Visual Art Education Programs (AP2SR), the Association of Art Education Programs (AP2SENI), and the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO).

Students of the Master’s Program in Art Education come from various regions across Indonesia—including Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)—as well as from abroad, such as South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, and Flores. Graduates are employed at various public and private universities across Indonesia, as well as in formal and non-formal art education institutions. The program maintains strong collaborations with local governments, particularly focusing on outreach to students from outside Java, helping to ensure a more even distribution of graduates across Indonesia.

Domestic institutional partners include the Departments of Education and Culture, Departments of Culture and Tourism, art communities, art studios, professional associations, and higher education institutions. Collaborating universities include Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), and the Indonesian Institute of Arts and Culture (ISBI) Bandung.
